The IP address is a unique identifier assigned to you by your ISP.  If you do not have a router, this IP address will be assigned to your computer.  If you do have a router, this IP address will be assigned to the WAN side of your router.  Your router then will generally assign 'non-routable' IP addresses to each of your computers or devices.
